The fact that the new owner is a Provincetown businessperson is significant, because a national trend in corporate ownership of hotels and restaurants has reached the Outer Cape’s shores. Three multistate hotel groups — Linchris Hotel Corp., Lexvest Group, and Sawyer Realty — have bought properties in Provincetown in the last two years. To that end, it’s difficult to imagine that the Gifford’s bars would have survived under corporate ownership, particularly the salty Club Purgatory.
Azar still hasn’t decided how to use the restaurant space. Azar said he had tried to buy a couple of other properties in town, but each time the deals had fallen apart at the last minute. He was about to start looking outside Provincetown, he said, but wanted to talk to Foss first. He was on his way to Sedona, Ariz. just a few days after the nonprofit Summer of Sass closed on its purchase of the Stowaway. Summer of Sass, which brings LGBTQ people ages 18 to 21 to Provincetown from difficult small-town environments, bought the Stowaway from Azar last year for $3.7 million. Porch Bar, the Love Lounge which boasts 7 nights of free entertainment during season, the Wilde a theatrical speakeasy, and Club Purgatory (oldest leather bar in America) are all active onsite as part of this destination. While blooming flowers, breaching whales, and singing birds are all familiar signs of spring in Provincetown, but so too are the sounds of buzz saws and hammers, saw dust in the air, and the smell of fresh paint. Such is the case at the top of Carver Street as the iconic Gifford House undergoes a renovation of structure and a revival of its spirit.

With so many high-spirited memories attached to the place, it’s no wonder that, if the many whispered ghost stories are to be believed, a handful of revelers have never left the Gifford House at all. In 2022 he sold the inn to the Summer of Sass, the non-profit program founded by comedian and Jill-of-all-creative-trades Kristen Becker that houses young LGBTQ adults from oppressive parts of the United States to start anew in Provincetown.
TheHamiltons re-plumbed the house with sound-deadening cast ironpiping. Another personal lavatory is located in a third bedroom acrossthe hall. Come the 1960s the Gifford House embraced the cutting edge when it was home to Beverly Bentley’s Act IV experimental theater company. Come the 1970s the transformation to a queer space would be rapid with the opening of Back Street in the former performance space of Act IV, now better known as Club Purgatory. It took some finagling and convincing, plus $6 million, for Azar to purchase the place. When word got out that Foss was considering selling, others jumped into the fray.

The Gifford Homestead is located 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the visitor center on the Scenic Drive. The families were good friends and helpers to each other, an important relationship in a small isolated community like Fruita. Water was carried to the house from the Fremont River and was used untreated. A two-hole outhouse served the family until an indoor bathroom and plumbing was installed in later years.
But, as Foss told the Provincetown Independent, he wanted to “keep the gay and lesbian and etcetera folk here.” On April 1, Azar became the new steward of the inn, maintaining a century-and-a-half tradition of independent ownership. Gifford House has been “family”-owned in all senses for generations. Lately, just within the last few years, corporate ownership has begun buying up many of the businesses we know and love in town, the businesses that made this place unique because of their personal touches and direct touch points to community. To this day, she says, she views everything "as a choice," including forgiving her late husband's affair with a former flight attendant named Suzen Johnson. "I could have let the seed germinate but I don't want to be that person, that bitter, angry, unhappy, miserable human being 'cause you know what you end up doing? You end up making everybody around you every bit as miserable," Kathie Lee told the outlet. "I have always felt from my earliest youth that I had the choice every day of my life to be a blessing or a burden, and I want to be a blessing."
With the sale complete he was looking for a new project and made an offer to Foss and Wilson on a whim. And now the yellow beacon of Carver Street, and not only her legacy, but future is in his hands as he takes the reins to welcome thousands of visitors as the summer season approaches. He bought it, fixed it up, and lived there with his wife until their child was born. The house, constructed of wood and aluminum paneling, collects, cleans, and reuses water; it also supplies its own power, and features photovoltaic cells and solar modules, a rainwater tank, a biological toilet, and natural ventilation.
